London Southbank Skateboarders before lockdown, 2020.

These images are among many pictures taken of the skateboarders who use a space near Waterloo, London to gather together for company and to pass the time.

They are mostly young men. I have spent time photographing them on two or three occasions, always with their permission, and always conscious that some might not want to be photographed. I have tried to be sensitive to their need for privacy, and checked with them that they are happy for me to show the photographs I take of them.

I took the photographs shown here with the aim of blurring the images by using a slow shutter speed on my camera. The blur ensures that individuals cannot be identified.

I am aware that some, if not all, of these young men (and occasionally women), might come from difficult home circumstances. I am drawn to their life, their energy, and their amazing skill as skateboarders. Their skill and determination deserves respect.
